SPORTS PERFORMANCE

Perform with greater confidence, focus and freedom

Whether you're competing at elite level, taking part for enjoyment, returning to a sport you love, or simply want to perform closer to your potential, what happens in your mind can have a powerful influence on what happens in your performance.

You may have the skill.

You may have put in the hours.

You may know exactly what you're capable of.

Yet, when the moment comes, something changes.

You overthink.

You lose focus.

You become anxious or tense.

You worry about making a mistake.

You struggle to reproduce in competition what you can do comfortably in training.

Or perhaps you've experienced a setback that has affected your confidence.

This is where sports performance hypnotherapy, mindset and coaching can help.

At WhiteOak, I work with the person behind the performance, helping you develop a more confident, focused and resilient mindset so that you can approach your sport with greater clarity and trust in yourself.

When your mind gets in the way of your ability

Performance isn't simply about physical ability.

Your thoughts, emotions, expectations and previous experiences can all influence how you perform.

Sometimes the harder we try to perform perfectly, the more we get in our own way.

You might find yourself thinking:

What if I mess up?

What if I can't do it when it matters?

Why can I do this in training but not in competition?

What will everyone think if I fail?

I know I can do it — so why can't I do it today?

These thoughts can become patterns and once a pattern has been established, it can feel difficult to change.

The aim isn't to stop you caring about your performance.

It's to help you develop a healthier relationship with it.

What can sports performance support help with?

Sports performance work can be useful for a wide range of goals, including:

  • Building confidence

  • Managing competition nerves

  • Reducing performance anxiety

  • Developing focus and concentration

  • Overcoming fear of failure

  • Managing pressure and expectations

  • Stopping overthinking

  • Recovering confidence after mistakes or setbacks

  • Returning to sport after injury

  • Developing consistency between training and competition

  • Improving mental preparation

  • Developing a more positive performance mindset

  • Letting go of unhelpful habits and thought patterns

  • Learning to trust your preparation and ability

  • Preparing mentally for an important event or competition

You don't need to be an elite athlete.

This work can be just as valuable for someone taking part in a local competition, learning a new sport, returning to something they loved years ago or simply wanting to enjoy their sport again.

Your sport. Your goals. Your mind.

Every athlete and performer is different.

There isn't a single mindset that creates great performance, and there isn't one technique that works for everyone.

That's why I don't take a one-size-fits-all approach.

We start with you.

What are you experiencing?

What would you like to change?

When does the difficulty occur?

What happens in your mind and body when you're under pressure?

What would it feel like if you could approach your performance differently?

From there, we can explore the approaches that may be most appropriate for you.

Bringing hypnotherapy, mindfulness and coaching together

My background as an Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist, alongside my experience with mindfulness and coaching, allows me to approach performance from a number of different perspectives.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy can help you work with the deeper patterns that influence thoughts, emotions, habits and responses.

It can be particularly useful when confidence issues, anxiety or performance blocks have become well-established patterns.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness can help develop greater awareness of thoughts, emotions and physical responses without becoming caught up in them.

For performers, this can support the ability to stay present rather than becoming distracted by what has already happened or what might happen next.

Coaching

Coaching gives you space to explore your goals, identify what may be holding you back and develop practical strategies for moving forward.

Sometimes you don't need more information.

You need a different perspective.

It's not about becoming someone else

You don't need to become fearless or to eliminate every nervous thought.

You don't need to turn yourself into a completely different kind of competitor.

Nerves are not necessarily the enemy.

Caring about something isn't a weakness.

The goal is to develop the ability to perform alongside those feelings rather than being controlled by them.

To recognise what is happening.

To reset.

To refocus.

To trust yourself and give yourself the best opportunity to use the ability you've already worked so hard to develop.

From training to competition

One of the most frustrating experiences can be knowing that you're capable of something, but not being able to reproduce it when it matters.

You might perform brilliantly during training and then find yourself tense or hesitant in competition.

Or perhaps you've had one difficult experience that has changed the way you approach your sport.

Maybe you made a mistake.

Lost confidence.

Suffered an injury.

Had a disappointing result.

Or simply reached a point where you started questioning yourself.

These experiences don't have to define your future performance.

Working with your mindset can help you develop a different relationship with those experiences and move forward with greater confidence.

For any sport

The principles of mental performance can be applied across many different sporting environments.

Whether you're involved in:

Equestrian sport • Running • Athletics • Swimming • Cycling • Golf • Tennis • Football • Rugby • Martial arts • Gymnastics • Dance • Rowing • Sailing • Motorsports • Team sports • Individual sports

Or something completely different.

Your sport may change.

The mental skills involved in performing under pressure often have much more in common than we realise and if your sport involves an animal...

My work with sports performance naturally connects with my work with horses and riders. Check out the Horse & Rider Harmony support for equestrians who want to explore the connection between their own mindset and their relationship with their horse.

You already have more ability than you think

Sometimes performance isn't about learning to do more.

It's about getting out of your own way.

It's about quietening the noise. Building confidence. Learning to manage pressure.

Letting go of perfectionism. Trusting your preparation.

Allowing yourself to perform rather than constantly evaluating your performance.

You don't have to wait until your confidence disappears completely before asking for support.

Sometimes the best time to work on your mindset is before the next big competition, event or challenge.
